5 Fun & Unique Ways to Decorate Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins has long been an autumn tradition for many families. It captures the spirit of the season and allows everyone to express their individuality. Visiting the pumpkin patch is always a family favorite and looking for the perfect pumpkin has almost become a sport . The whole process is enjoyable and memorable.

But if you’ve run out of creative ideas about how to decorate these seasonal gourds or are just plain tired of carving Sponge bob every year, check out this list of fun ideas to get you started. Get your family decorating, proudly display your works of art and enjoy the season!

1- Skip the knives and messy clean up of carving a pumpkin and try painting it instead. This is a great option for those with children who aren’t old enough to properly or safely use a knife. This allows everyone to personalize their pumpkins and seriously slows the rate at which your pumpkin spoils.

2- When you do opt for carving a pumpkin, try adding glow sticks inside instead of candles. This option is much safer and creates an eerie glowing effect that is perfect for Halloween. If you plan on carving several pumpkins, choose different colored glow sticks for a more varied display.

3- Displaying decorated pumpkins on the porch or in the front yard is a wonderful way to share your spooky spirit with your neighbors but how about keeping some of that hard work for yourself too? Carve a medium sized pumpkin and place cinnamon sticks inside to create a natural, homemade air freshener. Get the most out of your money with this practical Halloween decoration!

If you need cinnamon sticks, you can order them from here!

4- Although the weather can sometimes surprise us, it’s rare to be able to make snowmen in the Fall. Borrow this winter time activity and make an autumn “pumpkin-man” instead. Purchase three pumpkins, in varying sizes and carve. Cut a hole in the bottom of each pumpkin (except the bottom one) so the stem fits inside the next one, then stack them on top of each other to keep them together. (Don’t forget to add glow sticks!)

5- Jazz up a pumpkin decorating session by using other artistic embellishments with items like buttons, jewels, feathers and glitter. These can all easily be added with some glue or a hot glue gun (make sure kids use glue guns with adult supervision) and give each pumpkin its own personality.

You have shared great tips on how to decorate the pumpkins. We have three of them, one was carved by the kids (what a mess) and the other two are waiting. I like the idea of the glow stick and the ‘painting of the pumpkins’ is great too.
